Therapy Assistant

Therapy Assistant programs with Nathan are designed to reinforce Occupational Therapy goals through supported practice.

Nathan works with children and young people to build everyday skills, confidence, and independence — in the settings where these skills matter most: home, school, and community.

Therapy Assistants work under the indirect supervision of an Occupational Therapist to deliver structured programs that are fun and practical. Each program is flexible and individualised to each participant and their family.

Programs

Therapy Assistant sessions can support skill development in areas such as:

  • Daily living routines – building independence with morning and bedtime routines

  • Cooking– planning and preparing simple meals, learning kitchen safety

  • Shopping skills – developing confidence with lists, money handling, and decision-making

  • Home care tasks – learning laundry, cleaning, and organisation skills

  • Community participation – accessing local activities, volunteering, and using public transport

  • Getting your learner’s licence – helping prepare for learner driving test.

  • Physical and recreational skills – including bike riding, building motor skills, coordination, and outdoor activity participation

Play and Social Skills

For younger children or those who learn best through play, we also offer intensive play and social skills programs.

These sessions focus on:

  • Building emotional regulation and shared attention

  • Expanding communication and interaction skills

  • Supporting meaningful, joyful play and connection

  • Encouraging flexible thinking and problem-solving

Nathan is trained to use a strengths-based, neurodiversity-affirming approach — always following the child’s lead while gently stretching their capacity for engagement and learning.

How It Works

•      Collaborative planning: Programs are designed together with families and the Occupational Therapist to ensure they are meaningful, practical, and goal-focused

•      Individualised programs: The Occupational Therapist creates a tailored Therapy Assistant plan (delegation) outlining the strategies, goals, and supports needed for success.

•      Flexible delivery: The Therapy Assistant arranges sessions directly with the family and delivers supports in the most relevant environment — at home, school, or in the community.

•      Real-world learning: Using neurodiversity-affirming approaches, we focus on building skills in the settings where they are naturally used.

•      Ongoing review: Programs are regularly reviewed and adjusted by the Occupational Therapist to celebrate progress and ensure continued growth.
